CyberConnect June Event with Wrays Intellectual Properties
🔐CyberSecurity x IP Protection: Insights from the CyberConnect June Event
Last night, CyberWest Hub had the pleasure of co-hosting a thought-provoking CyberConnect session with Wrays | Intellectual Property, focused on one of the most critical challenges facing modern businesses: protecting intellectual property (IP) without compromising agility.
Huge thanks to Ramzi Bahbah, Scott Vilé and Michael Pasquale for sharing their expertise on the intersection of IP and cybersecurity. Your insights sparked rich discussions and practical ideas—thank you!
📄 Intellectual Property is often a business’s most valuable asset. But with hybrid work, cloud platforms, and third-party relationships, safeguarding it is more complex than ever.
🧠 We challenged participants to explore: How do we defend against cyber threats targeting IP, without disrupting business operations?
💬 The room tackled this from multiple angles, surfacing some powerful strategies:
Education & Training: Building awareness through ongoing education is key, especially for staff handling sensitive material.
IP Classification & Segmentation: Splitting IP into manageable components helps tailor protection strategies.
Third-Party Risk Management: Balancing trust and verification with vendors and suppliers is essential. Procurement processes must be robust and security-conscious.
Calculated Risk & Fit-for-Purpose Controls: Security measures should be proportionate to the size and nature of the organisation, with clear KPIs and assurance levels.
Certifications & Reporting: Leveraging certifications and regular reporting helps maintain accountability and transparency.
Access Control & Continuous Review: Organisations must understand their IP landscape and implement dynamic access controls with regular reviews.
AI & Pattern Recognition: Emerging tools like AI can assist in identifying suspicious patterns and anomalies.
SoC & SoR Integration: Security Operations Centres (SoC) and Systems of Record (SoR) play a vital role in monitoring and managing IP-related threats.
💡 The key takeaway? Security and agility are not mutually exclusive. With the right mix of culture, awareness, and practical controls, businesses can protect their IP while continuing to innovate.
Thanks to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a rich and engaging session. We’re excited to see how these ideas shape the future of WA’s cyber ecosystem!
